Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI)

What is the ASLI Designation?

An ongoing initiative of the WSIA Education Foundation, and an original objective of the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation, the Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI)  is a professional excess and surplus lines designation program.  This program is designed to be an avenue for professionals working in the surplus lines industry to increase their depth of knowledge in the field, matching their career experience to practical coursework. 

Current Requirements

The ASLI program contains a combination of general and specialized knowledge. It consists of four courses and credentialing examinations: two courses that focus exclusively on surplus lines, ASLI 163 - Surplus Lines Insurance Operations and ASLI 164 - Surplus Lines Insurance Products, and two elective courses selected from the list of approved electives below.

What the ASLI Courses Cover

ASLI 163—Surplus Lines Insurance Operations: This course covers these topics: Overview of Surplus Lines Operations; Insurance Regulation; Surplus Lines Insurance Marketing; Development of New Products and Programs; Underwriting—Risk Assessment; Underwriting—Ratemaking; Claims; Reinsurance; Insurer Financial Statements; Financial Analysis of Insurers and Intermediaries; and The Underwriting Cycle.

ASLI 164—Surplus Lines Insurance Products: This course covers these topics: Overview of Surplus Lines Insurance Products; Commercial Property Insurance; Business Income Insurance and Other Indirect Loss Coverages; Inland Marine, Ocean Marine, and Aviation Insurance; Commercial General Liability Insurance; Professional Liability Insurance; Environmental and Cyber Risk Coverages; Commercial Excess and Umbrella Liability Insurance; and Personal Insurance.


Electives for the ASLI program cover a variety of areas: including: claims, underwriting, risk management, agency operations, premium auditing, accounting and finance, information technology, reinsurance and more.

Methods of Study

A number of ways exist to study and prepare for the credentialing examinations required to earn the ASLI designation. These include (1) attending a class, (2) organizing a study group at your place of employment, and (3) studying independently. About the Examinations

ASLI exams are two-hour, computer-administered, objective (multiple-choice) questions, which are available during specific testing windows:
  • January 15 – March 15
  • April 15 – June 15
  • July 15 – September 15
  • October 15 – December 15
Two electives are also required; log on to for exam information on each of the electives. Students who pass all four examinations earn the Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI) designation.
