About The Summit

This capstone program focuses on developing and implementing strategic planning, leadership and change management at the personal, team and organizational level. Senior-level professionals learn through intensive, real-life case studies taught by faculty from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Participants return to their organizations with the tools and mindsets to act more strategically. Attendees will develop the enterprise perspective required to make winning choices while running their businesses in today’s complex environment.

NAPSLO members with considerable E&S industry experience who are at the top of their organizations' leadership teams, and senior-level members with direct responsibility for obtaining superior and sustainable results, should attend the summit.

  • Learning, Leading and Change - Improve ability to build trust and commitment from producers by creating a positive and fulfilling sales environment and learn to identify and implement change success factors. 
  • From Tactical to Strategic Leadership - Focus support to business segments that offer sustainable opportunity to grow and produce underwriting profit. Gain a stronger understanding of the link between what retail producers need and what can be profitably sold to them.
  • Leadership and High Performance - Understand the value of steward leadership when dealing within and organization and partnering with others.
  • Can You Say What Your Strategy Is? - Understand the meaning and importance of staying “outside” an organization when developing high-level strategy.
  • The Power of Story and Personal Engagement - Identify and assess personal foundation beliefs and how those can help chart future career paths. Learn the importance of personal stories and how to value them as an effective leadership tool. 
  • CEO Discussion - Bryan Sanders, Markel, will offer executive-level perspective on today's issues in the surplus lines industry and related personal career experiences.

Hotel and Dining Accommodations

The Inn at Darden is located on the North Grounds of the University of Virginia, 100 Darden Blvd., Charlottesville, VA. Housing is handled by NAPSLO as part of the registration process.
The Inn features 180 private hotel rooms with free internet access, a recreation center and 24-hour service desk. All guests at the Inn at Darden enjoy world-class dining at the Abbott Center.

Session Location

Executive Leadership Summit sessions are held at the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. The sessions are located adjacent to the Inn at Darden and the Abbott Center. 

Travel Information

  • The Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO) offers daily non-stop service from a number of cities and is located eight miles north of Charlottesville. 
  • Alternative regional airports are: Richmond International Airport (RIC), Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Reagan International Airport (DCA).
  • AMTRAK serves Charlottesville at Union Station, 810 West Main Street, which is three miles from the Inn at Darden. Cab service is available from the train station. 

Executive Leadership Summit Cancellation Policy

  • Registrants can receive a full refund, less a $50 fee for processing, through March 6, 2017. 
  • Registrants can receive a 50% refund between March 7 and March 20, 2017.
  • No refund for the Management Program will be offered after March 20, 2017. 
  • Should you cancel after March 20, you will be offered a limited time opportunity to substitute someone else from your firm as an alternative to the above policy.
  • These refund time periods are subject to change, annually, based upon hotel contract and policy changes. All requests must be made in writing via email to vicky@napslo.org.
