The Extreme Risk Takers Symposium

The Alpha Kappa Chapter at the Katie School of Insurance at Illinois State University hosts an annual Extreme Risk Takers Symposium. The symposium is an educational program sponsored by the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation on the surplus lines insurance market and offers sessions and networking opportunities with peers and industry professionals. Topics and panel discussions from past symposiums include:

Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation Golf Invitational

The Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation Golf Invitational is an annual event which assists the Foundation in funding numerous educational endeavors, including providing scholarships to students pursuing insurance degrees, supporting the Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI) designation program and commissioning the A.M. Best Co. to produce the annual report on the surplus lines market. The Golf Invitational is held in conjunction with the NAPSLO Mid-Year Leadership Forum.

The 2016 event was held March 2 in Scottsdale, AZ during the 2016 NAPSLO Mid-Year Leadership Forum. The tournament raised more than $100,000 with 122 participating golfers. A list of sponsors and winners is available online here

The Surplus Lines Symposium

Atlanta, GA

The Surplus Lines Symposium is hosted by Troy University’s Sorrell College of Business each fall and students from several universities attend the event. In 2016 there were 190 registered student attendees from 21 different universities, with 15 industry firms participating in the career fair. Information about the 2017 symposium will be available in August. 

The annual symposium features a career fair, reception/dinner and educational sessions with various presenters from the surplus lines industry, and receives sponsorship from the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Foundation. 

Attendees hear from surplus lines industry representatives and the selection of speakers ensures that a variety of points of view are presented for a thorough discuss of the excess & surplus lines insurance industry. The symposium features a career fair and networking opportunities to allow students to begin building relationships to aid their transition to the professional world. Topics and discussions include:

  • Lifecycle of a risk
  • Lloyd's and the global market 
  • Leadership in the E&S industry
  • Future of the industry and emerging risks
  • Lloyd's and the Global Market
